Rotate the bolt-piece (or "adjustable latch") 90 degrees to the "long" configuration (2 3/4") to fit most doors.

DESIGN
The description isn't clear that this is a single sided deadbolt (i.e., it takes a key from one-side, the outside), and has a thumb-lever (which Kwikset calls the "turnpiece") on the other side to lock or unlock from inside. Just what I wanted, and the kind of deadbolt most used.
